Innue artist of many talents, Geneviève McKenzie-Sioui, also known as Shanipiap, is a singer-songwriter, storyteller, host, television producer, and author. Born in Matimekush, near Schefferville, she has lived for many years in Wendake, where she continues an artistic practice deeply rooted in the transmission of Innu knowledge and culture.

She has been writing and performing songs in the Innu language since the late 1970s. In 1999, she released her debut album, La Lune du Labrador, under the name Shanipiap. Alongside her music career, she founded Productions Shanipiap and created the children’s television series Les Découvertes de Shanipiap, which she produced and hosted for APTN and TFO.

Through her songs, stories, and writings, Geneviève McKenzie-Sioui builds a bridge between Innu traditions and the contemporary world. Accompanied by her drum and distinctive voice, she honours the memory of her ancestors, the Innu language, and the cultural values that continue to inspire her work. Her remarkable career has made her one of the leading figures in Indigenous arts and culture in Quebec and across Canada.
